The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1 cover by Erica Henderson

I picked The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl from Marvel Comics up today, hoping for a fun comic, and that is exactly what this is. Doreen Green has the proportionate strength and speed of a squirrel and the ability to communicate with with squirrels. Also, a girl. Along with her sidekick Tippy-Toe, Squirrel Girl is off to college, and trying to maintain her secret identity. Throw in an animal themed Spidey villian, a new roommate, and sprinkle with joy. There is nothing major to avoid spoiling, but I would rather just let people read it and enjoy it. The writing is charming, funny, and keeps the book zipping by. It’s the art that is the star here though, Henderson is a fantastic cartoonist. Her style is open and expressive, Alphona by way of Rumiko Takahashi. The colors are gorgeous and lend to the animation ready feel of the book. Can’t wait for the kids to check it out. Enjoy!
